US House Republicans have released a report accusing Democratic President Joe Biden of impeachable offenses, Reuters reports.
As the agency notes, it is not yet clear whether the congressmen will insist on voting on impeachment. The White House previously rejected their investigation as politically motivated.
The 291-page report from three House committees alleges that Biden benefited from an influence-peddling scheme to enrich himself and his family members. Republicans said the scheme began in 2014 when he was vice president. The report accuses Biden of facilitating his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings with partners in Ukraine, China, Russia, and elsewhere.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, could call a vote to impeach Biden. But that would happen in the weeks leading up to the election: Americans will vote for a new president on November 5.
Even if the Republican-controlled House moves to impeach Biden, it is unlikely that he will be removed from office. That would require the consent of the Senate, which is controlled by his own Democratic Party. Biden, who withdrew his reelection bid in July, is scheduled to leave office when his successor is sworn in on January 20, 2025.
