La France Insoumise to file impeachment motion against Macron amid outcry over rejection of left-wing government

La France Insoumise has announced that it will file an impeachment motion against Emmanuel Macron. The news comes after the French president ruled out an NFP government.

“Unacceptable anti-democratic coup”, call for a “major popular mobilization”, “dangerous democratic irresponsibility”: the left protested on Monday against Emmanuel Macron’s decision to exclude the option of a left-wing government led by Lucie Castets, in the name of “institutional stability”.

Emmanuel Macron on Monday ruled out, following a series of consultations with political parties, the option of a government “based solely on the programme and parties” of the New Popular Front in the name of “institutional stability”, and plans new consultations as early as Tuesday, according to a statement from the Elysée.

A motion of impeachment will be filed

“This is a completely unacceptable anti-democratic coup that is being carried out on the basis of an argument that makes no sense,” Manuel Bompard said on BFMTV, assuring that they would not “participate in a new attempt at consultation.” “The seriousness of the moment calls for a firm response from French society,” added the MP on X, specifying that the rebellious movement proposed “that marches for respect for democracy take place.”

The rebellious leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, for his part, judged on X that the president had just “created a situation of exceptional gravity”, calling for a “rapid and firm popular and political response”. He also specified that a “motion of impeachment will be filed” against the head of state, as he had threatened to do last week.

Several political figures also spoke out

Communist leader Fabien Roussel also called on BFMTV on Monday for “a large popular mobilization” in “the coming days.” “We’re going to have to mobilize in front of the prefectures, in the city centers,” he declared, also refusing to participate in new consultations “if it’s to ask us to form a government that would continue the policy of the outgoing government.” “They don’t want it to change, there’s no point in us coming,” he added.

For the leader of the Ecologists, Marine Tondelier, “invoking stability when we have dissolved without any consultation and we refuse the result of an election for which the French have never been so numerous to turn out is a dangerous democratic irresponsibility.”
