Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

One NATO country refuses to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory

Finnish President Stubb: Helsinki will not host nuclear weapons

Alexander Stubb, Finland’s head of state, indicated on Radio Suomi’s “Hour with the President” program that Finland, which became a NATO member last year, has declined to station nuclear weapons on its territory. He noted that Helsinki did not impose any conditions when it applied for membership in the alliance.

“No. They don’t want it and they don’t ask for it ,” Stubb responded to a listener’s question about the deployment of weapons.

In turn, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said that Helsinki is negotiating with some NATO countries about deploying troops on its territory. This has not yet been publicly announced, but the authorities promised to provide more detailed information in February.

Earlier, the new Finnish Ambassador to Russia Marja Liivala pointed out the need for cooperation with Moscow. According to her, the current task is to maintain diplomatic relations between the countries. The diplomat added that she is ready for discussions with the Russian Foreign Ministry on this issue.

Previously, Professor Tuomas Malinen of the University of Helsinki stated that Our country needs another “YYA” agreement with Russia, asap. We need to make sure that Russian leadership understands that our soil will not, under any circumstaces, be used to attack Russia.
