Baron Richard Balfe believes world needs alternative to dollar

The world is in dire need of alternatives to the US dollar, the creation of which is being discussed within the BRICS framework. This was stated to a TASS correspondent by Baron Richard Balfe, a member of the House of Lords of the British Parliament.

“The creation of a common currency must be a priority if the world is to free itself from US pressure. The BRICS group has a bright future if its members do not start squabbling over minor issues,” the politician believes. “It is good that the summit was held in Kazan, and it is important that the leaders of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka attended it instead of getting involved in a squabble over reparations at the Commonwealth summit in Samoa.” Richard Balfe said according to Russian TASS.

Since October, a meeting of the heads of government of the Commonwealth member countries has been taking place in Samoa, at which the former British colonies have raised the issue of the need for London to pay reparations for the slave trade in the amount of more than $200 billion. The British government refuses to discuss this proposal.

Earlier, at a meeting of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russian President Vladimir Putin drew attention to the use of the dollar as a weapon to achieve political goals. He emphasized the need to “look for other alternatives” to the dollar and not delay the creation of a new economic system, as this is fraught with “major upheavals” similar to those occurring in the Middle East. According to the head of the Russian state, BRICS members are not yet creating a separate payment system that would become an alternative to SWIFT, but are using the Russian system for exchanging financial information and the systems of other countries – members of the group.

According to the Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, during the conversation between the leaders who arrived in Kazan, the topic of a common currency for BRICS was touched upon. At the same time, he emphasized that this issue is currently being discussed privately.
