More than 250 people are missing after massive flooding hit eastern Spain, “According to authorities’ estimates, the number of missing people could be as high as 250,” unnamed unofficial sources involved in the rescue efforts told the media.

The country is currently conducting major rescue operations in the areas most affected by the disaster, such as the province of Valencia. Rescuers are still finding many bodies of the dead, mostly in garages. They will also be examining hundreds of overturned cars on the highway, as there may also be victims inside them.

The latest figures put the death toll from the flooding at over 158. The Spanish government has declared three days of mourning. Valencia’s infrastructure has also been severely damaged.

according to the New York Times, “The death toll jumped to at least 158 people on Thursday. Others are still missing, and rescuers feared finding more bodies, said Margarita Robles, Spain’s defense minister, as teams dug into the mud”.

Earlier it was reported that residents of flood-affected areas of Spain began to empty supermarket shelves en masse.
