Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in the G20 summit, which will be held November 18-19 in Rio de Janeiro. This was announced at a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
“On November 18-19, the next G20 summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, a Brazilian city. On the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the delegation of our country at the said event will be headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov,” the diplomat said.
Zakharova indicated that Lavrov’s speeches are planned for November 18 during plenary sessions on the topics of combating inequality, hunger, and poverty, as well as reform of global institutions. In addition, a series of bilateral negotiations and contacts with the head of the Russian foreign policy department are planned on the sidelines of the summit.
As the diplomat noted, Russia intends to announce at the G20 summit its accession to the alliance to combat hunger and poverty, which is the flagship initiative of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In addition, she added, the Russian side intends to promote at the summit unifying ideas aimed at implementing the concept of sustainable development taking into account various national economic models, and strategies, as well as “approaches for the rational implementation of energy transitions, maintaining open, non-discriminatory international trade, creating market mechanisms in the spirit of the decisions of the BRICS summit Kazan, Russia, that are not subject to the opportunistic and narrowly selfish interests of some countries.”
