Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

China calls for a “ceasefire” in the Ukraine-Russia war: It should end with negotiations

China stressed that the Ukraine-Russia war must end with a peaceful solution. A lasting peace can be achieved through negotiations.

As the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meets for a high-level session on “Ukraine,” China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, stated that the ongoing ground battles have intensified the humanitarian crisis and exacerbated spillover effects worldwide. However, he noted the growing global demand for peace. Geng urged the conflicting parties to initiate peace talks at the earliest opportunity and called on the international community to provide support and foster conditions conducive to reconciliation and dialogue.

At a session held at the UN Security Council, China’s representative Geng Shuang spoke about the Ukraine-Russia war. Noting that the intensity of the conflicts was increasing and humanitarian crises were deepening, Geng drew attention to the strengthening of the demand for peace around the world. “The international community assessing the Ukraine crisis is increasingly focusing on a solution through negotiations and pushing for peace, from Asia and Africa to Europe and America, from the south and north to the east and west,” he said.

Geng said the international community has begun to develop the conditions necessary to support peace between Ukraine and Russia, stressing that historically, military means have not brought lasting peace. “History has repeatedly proven that military means will not bring lasting peace, and all conflicts will ultimately end at the negotiation table,” he said. China stressed that the parties should come together and start peace talks as soon as possible.

China’s position on the Ukraine-Russia war remains clear and consistent. Geng Shuang has always advocated that China should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. He also stated that the purposes and principles of the United Nations should be respected. “China is ready to further strengthen communication with relevant parties and continue its unremitting efforts and constructive role to achieve peace sooner,” he said.

China pointed out that the Ukraine-Russia war has turned into a humanitarian crisis affecting not only the two countries but the entire region. Therefore, a peaceful approach to the solution is more critical than ever, Geng said and demanded that negotiations be started quickly, according to CGTN.

China maintains that negotiations are the only way to end the war and resolve the humanitarian crisis in the region. Stating that the parties should come together for a peaceful solution with the support of the international community, China continues to hold a firm stance on this issue.
