Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Macron’s resignation only possible with treason charges, Says Russian expert Evgenia Obichkina

French President Emmanuel Macron will be forced to resign early only if he is accused of treason. There are no other grounds for him to agree to leave his post, and there will be none, Evgenia Obichkina, professor of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia at MGIMO, said.

Macron is a very experienced politician, strong in various political combinations. There is no reason to think that Macron could leave his post prematurely, she emphasized.

However, the rating of the current French leader has fallen significantly, he has lost a serious social base and the support of citizens, Obichkina noted. According to the Constitution of France, the president of the country is, in fact, a national arbiter who must balance all social contradictions, but in the absence of support, he cannot act.

Against this background, the country’s Prime Minister Michel Barnier had to decide on a tough policy to carry out social reforms bypassing the National Assembly, which refused to support them.

“And now, once again, the crisis has gone very far and Barnier’s appointment was very controversial,” she further said.

Recall that the day before, the National Assembly of France adopted a resolution of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier – 331 deputies voted for this step. This decision was made after the French cabinet adopted the social part of the state budget without a vote in parliament – now these provisions will be canceled, and the French government will be forced to resign for the first time since 1962.

According to the Independent, Macron said that he does not plan to leave his post before the end of his term and called such proposals “political fantasy.”

Earlier, Le Pen called on Macron to step down as President of France.
