It has been suggested that the EU is making efforts to relax the US sanctions imposed on Gazprombank, which authorizes it to trade in Russian gas. EU countries, which assess possible risks to energy security, are discussing the type and scope of mitigating measures.

The European Union (EU) has asked the US to ease sanctions on Gazprombank. It has been claimed that alternative ways are being sought to make it possible to pay for Russian gas through Gazprombank again.

The talks are continuing in a move to counter the impact of US restrictions after President Vladimir Putin lifted a requirement for foreign buyers to use only Gazprombank when buying Russian gas.

According to Putin’s latest decree, foreign recipients will now be able to use other banks to convert money into rubles before transfer, but Gazprombank remains the sole authorized institution for payments.

The EU and the US are discussing the type and scope of easing measures after some European governments and companies warned that sanctions would pose a risk to the region’s supply security, According to Bloomberg.

The options include whether payments can be made legally through a Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Gazprombank or whether it would be better to use other payment channels, it was noted.
