Syrian civil war ends and UN chief calls for protection of Syrian rights

According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad´s regime in Syria is a historic turning point. Guterres said the Syrian people now have a distinctive opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future for them, after 14 years of painful Syrian conflict. He added that the future of Syria should be decided by its people, and international support is vital to the transition process.

In his statement, Guterres spoke of the need for an inclusive political transition and the need for the rights of all Syrians to be protected. It must be a peace achieved without violence, and it must restore Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The United Nations is committed to supporting the people and Government of Syria in this fragile moment, including by pursuing progress on political reconciliation and accountability that is aligned with international law.

But with the Assad regime falling, the long road ahead is also a rocky one. Humanitarian needs remain dire, and millions of Syrians are still displaced or suffering from the war’s long ripple effects. The UN cooperates with Syrian leaders to rebuild the nation, with a good intention to transform the future of Syria into a peaceful, inclusive, and democratic country to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of its people.

No more war in Syria, as the global community will watch closely while Syria navigates its own road to lasting peace according to the VOA News.
