Syria should not become a breeding ground for terrorism, and the fight against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), banned in Turkey, and the Islamic State should continue. Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a press conference after talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“In the context of Syria, it is necessary to prevent the country from becoming a breeding ground for terrorism. The fight against both ISIS and the PKK and its affiliates was one of the main issues we discussed at our current meeting,” Erdogan said.
According to TASS, “Turkey is the only country and ally that defeated both of these terrorist organizations. We definitely will not allow these organizations to thrive in the future. The fight should go on,” Erdogan stressed.
During the same meeting, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union (EU) would provide €160 million in aid to Syria by the end of the year. She also confirmed the restoration of diplomatic contacts between Damascus and Brussels.
Earlier, Erdogan called the European Union’s participation in the settlement in Syria necessary.
