Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday amid Ukraine’s refusal to transit gas through the country, Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic said.
“This has affected Slovakia and Austria the most, Slovakia the most. Austria says it will avoid this in another way through other suppliers, we’ll see. But Slovakia is in a difficult situation in any case,” the Serbian president said.
Vucic noted that after Ukraine’s refusal, the situation became even more complicated.
On December 16, Ukraine warned Slovakia that it would stop transiting Russian gas from January 1, 2025. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said his country was ready to consider the possibility of transporting any gas except Russian.
According to Reuters Fico warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that if Kyiv does not allow gas transit through Ukrainian territory to Europe, a serious conflict could arise. He recalled that Bratislava provides assistance to Kyiv and expects the same attitude.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Slovakia called Ukraine’s ideas on the transit of Russian gas absurd.
