Putin and Rustam Minnikhanov discuss major drone attack on Kazan as authorities respond to strike

President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov says we have just spoken over the phone, so I’ll make it short. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov after a major drone attack on Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. President Putin received operating reports from the Minister of Defense about the emergency.

The attack saw eight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) striking a series of sites in Kazan. Two of those buildings were apartment buildings, and one was a low-rise residential building. A second drone hit an industrial facility also. Miraculously, there were no reported casualties. This is the first attack that UAVs have been reported to have used on Kazan, earlier attacks occurred, targeting Yelabuga, Nizhnekamsk, and several districts in the republic.

In response to the attack, Kazan’s international airport suspended operations, and public gatherings were canceled for the weekend. It added that air defense systems intercepted three of them and neutralized five others through electronic warfare measures. Authorities confirmed there were no casualties.

According to Forbes, The Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, denounced the attack as an “act of international terrorism.” She said such actions are unacceptable and called for international condemnation.

The Republic of Tatarstan, whose capital is Kazan, is a cultural and economic hub in Russia home to almost 1.3 million residents. Its history is also shaped by its role in the defense industry, as it is home to some military manufacturing plants. The recent drone attack highlights the continuing conflict and the situation of the war which enabled the use of drones to attack critical infrastructures behind the front lines.

The use of drones has rapidly expanded within modern warfare, and the implications it has on national security have only increased, with this incident exemplifying that fact. The government’s response, including the temporary closure of the airport and the cancellation of public events, attests to the seriousness with which such attacks are treated.

And investigators continue to grapple with who the attackers were, and how much destruction was wrought per its tottlement. The situation is being closely followed by the international community, considering its implications for regional stability as well as security.
