Indonesia has joined BRICS as a full member of the community. This was stated in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, which took over the chairmanship of the association on January 1.
According to Reuters, Indonesia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that it welcomed the announcement and that “BRICS membership is a strategic way to increase collaboration and partnership with other developing nations.”
The statement also noted that Indonesia’s candidacy received the endorsement of the leaders of the community at the Johannesburg summit in South Africa in August 2023. Brazil congratulates the Government of Indonesia on its accession to BRICS. With the largest population and economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia advocates for the reform of global governance institutions together with other community members and positively contributes to deepening cooperation in the global South,” according to the Washington Post.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that from 2025, a number of countries will join BRICS as partner countries of the community, among them Indonesia was named. Other partners announced include Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
