The death toll from the earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in southwest China has risen to 53, with another 62 injured.
“53 people have been confirmed dead and 62 injured as of midday on January 7 as a result of the earthquake that struck Dingri County,” according to ChinaDaily.
The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 7.1. The China Seismic Center estimated the magnitude at 6.8.
The epicenter of the seismic event was located 163 km from the city of Shigatse, the second-largest settlement in Tibet. The source was located at a depth of 10 km.
Strong tremors were felt by residents of Dingri district. As a result, many buildings collapsed. The tremors were also felt in Nepal, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
