The Moldovan government’s blocking of electricity supplies to Transnistria is a mockery of the residents of the unrecognized state. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
According to the diplomat, neo-Nazism is currently being encouraged in Transnistria.
“The entire arsenal, the entire toolkit is being used, because we are talking about an absolutely unlimited, permissive application of the entire range of things that should have sunk into oblivion, from harassment based on language to the disconnecting of vital sources. This is mockery in the truest sense of the word,” Zakharova said.
On January 1, 2025, the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to European countries through the territory of Ukraine expired. At the same time, gas supplies from the Russian Federation to Transnistria, which has no alternative sources of this fuel, were stopped.
According to BNE, Majority state-owned Russian company Gazprom discontinued its gas supplies to Moldova on January 1, saying that Moldovagaz, in which the Russian company holds a majority stake, “constantly failed to pay the bills, which is a significant breach of the contractual terms”. Most likely, the “constant failure to pay the bills” concerns the $800mn historic debts claimed by Gazprom but not recognized by the Moldovan authorities — unless Gazprom changed its policy and expects Transnistria to pay its outstanding gas bills that have already topped $10bn. Moldovagaz’s end users in the region controlled by the Moldovan constitutional authorities (Moldova proper) have not used one molecule of Russian gas in the past two years.
As a result, central heating was turned off and the hot water supply was cut off in houses located on the territory of the republic. In addition, rolling blackouts began in Transnistria.
Earlier, Moldova was warned against resolving the Transnistria problem by force.
