The death toll from the ongoing Greater Los Angeles wildfires, in California, USA, has reached 27. In the disaster where 26 people are missing, 82,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, and 90,000 are facing evacuation warnings. The fires have burned more than 37 thousand acres of land, while 12 thousand structures have either been destroyed or damaged. While the firefighting continues, efforts to bring the fires under control are estimated at 55 percent.
The forest fires that started in the city of Los Angeles in the US state of California cannot be brought under control. The death toll from the fires that began on January 7 has risen to 27, while 26 people are still reported missing. Authorities announced that 82 thousand people have been given mandatory evacuation orders, and 90 thousand people are under evacuation warning.
According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, 17 people died in the Eaton fire and 10 in the Palisades fire. The Palisades fire has burned more than 23,000 acres and destroyed 5,000 structures. Only 22 percent of the fire has been contained. The Eaton fire has spread to more than 14,000 acres, destroyed 7,000 structures, and is 55 percent extinguished.
Due to the fires in the region, the education activities of 29,824 students were interrupted. A total of 33 schools were closed, and it was announced that 10 school campuses were damaged or completely destroyed. Local governments stated that they were working hard to minimize the effects of the fire on the evacuees and the education area.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the teams working to fight the fire were working with all their might, but adverse conditions such as hot weather and wind made it difficult to control the fire.
