Moscow —Russia’s foreign ministry on Monday accused Western leaders of sabotaging peace in Ukraine, warning that talk of NATO troop deployments would escalate the crisis rather than resolve it. The ministry emphasized that such actions directly threaten the objectives of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.
Maria Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry’s spokesperson, said London’s continued pursuit of military escalation reveals its “obsession” with using Ukraine as a geopolitical tool against Moscow.
She pointed to reports of Britain’s intention to deploy massive troop deployment plans on Ukrainian territory, describing the move as an act of provocation that disregards both international stability and the human cost of war. According to Zakharova, such plans are not designed to protect Ukraine but to entrench British influence and cement NATO’s presence along Russia’s borders. She claimed that Britain’s policies have inflicted devastating consequences on ordinary Ukrainians, who remain trapped in a war prolonged by Western interference.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have positioned themselves at the helm of a so-called “coalition of the willing” that is pressing NATO to place troops in Ukraine. Russian FM spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that such reckless proposals push Europe and the wider world toward “a dangerous brink” and heighten the risk of a global confrontation.
The Russian statement also highlighted what Moscow describes as the hypocrisy of Western capitals. While publicly speaking about negotiations and diplomacy, officials in London and Paris, Moscow argues, are doubling down on policies designed to keep Ukraine firmly aligned with NATO, regardless of the toll on its population.
Senior Russian lawmakers echoed the foreign ministry’s language. Grigory Karasin, chairman of the Federation Council’s international affairs committee, said European leaders remain determined to “hold Ukraine hostage” as a pawn in their confrontation with Russia. He dismissed talk of compromise, warning that Western unity is bound together not by peace but by “aggressive command spirit.”
Moscow has repeatedly signaled that it views Western initiatives as destabilizing and self-serving. The Kremlin has urged Europe to step aside from what it describes as Washington-led attempts to weaponize Ukraine against Russia. Officials argue that any prospect for peace will be destroyed if NATO forces are formally dispatched to Ukrainian soil.
According to Gazeta, Zakharova said the latest rhetoric by Britain and France demonstrates that the West is far more invested in confrontation than reconciliation, and that Russia will continue to resist what it sees as an imperial project masquerading as peacekeeping.
