NYT Strands answers for July 17, 2026 (puzzle #866):

Spangram: TRIVIALPURSUIT

Strand words: ENTERTAINMENT, GEOGRAPHY, SPORTS, NATURE

Trivial Pursuit, the trivia board game first published in Canada in 1981, built its gameplay around six color-coded wedge categories – broad areas of human knowledge and culture that players must answer questions from to collect a complete pie and win. The NYT Strands puzzle draws four of those six original category names for its strand words.

ENTERTAINMENT (the pink wedge in the original game) and GEOGRAPHY (blue wedge) are two of Trivial Pursuit’s most familiar pillars. SPORTS rounds out the orange wedge, where the full category name is Sports & Leisure, and NATURE covers the green wedge, where Science & Nature is the complete label. The puzzle leaves out History, and Art & Literature – the yellow and brown wedges – and the four-strand words plus the 13-letter spangram fill the 48-square grid exactly.

The puzzle’s difficulty hinges on reading the clue correctly. “Categorically speaking” can point toward classification in the abstract – words meaning groups, types, or labels – and solvers who chase that interpretation will burn hints before the board game connection surfaces. Once TRIVIALPURSUIT clicks as the spangram, the strand words follow quickly. ENTERTAINMENT and GEOGRAPHY are the longest and tend to anchor the search space earliest, with SPORTS and NATURE filling the remaining squares once the longer words are placed.
