Outgoing Czech President Milos Zeman said Serbia’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia could be a boon for Belgrade’s eventual role as a mediator in the war in Ukraine.
Speaking in Belgrade, Zeman said “the mediator should definitely not support one side or the other”, giving Serbia’s position a potential advantage.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Zeman said China and Turkey were other potential mediators in this war.
Turkey has officially offered itself on several occasions as an intermediary between Russia and Ukraine.
So far, there is no indication that either party is ready to accept the offer of mediation.
