The governor of the Jewish Autonomous Region, Rostislav Goldstein, is the only leader of the Russian region against whom US sanctions have not yet been imposed. He told RTVI that this situation caused him “moral suffering” and that he was ready to file a complaint in Strasbourg.
An RTVI correspondent asked Goldstein what he thought about the fact that US sanctions had not yet been imposed on him. In response, the Governor said: “If you want to ask why I alone have not been put on the sanctions lists, I will say this: I will sue them in Strasbourg! They cause moral suffering, you bastards. I do not comment on this topic.
On February 24, 2023, the US Treasury released a new sanctions list for Russian citizens. Dozens of governors of Russian regions fell under the restrictions.
In total, since the start of hostilities in Ukraine, the United States has imposed sanctions on the leaders of ten regions of the Far Eastern Federal District, as well as on the leaders of the remaining 78 subjects.
