A diamond over 3.6 billion years old has been found in rocks of the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe in Yakutia.

This kimberlite pipe is the largest diamond deposit in Russia. Siberian scientists, together with an international team, studied diamond samples brought to the surface from depths of more than 250 kilometers.

Analysis of the sulfide in the stone showed the stone to be 3.6 billion years old. A diamond was formed at a depth of 180 kilometers at a temperature of over 1400 degrees Celsius and a pressure of over 5.5 GPa.

The crystals themselves were mined from the depths around 370 million years ago, said Academician Nikolai Pokhilenko, scientific director of the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. . Science in Siberia reports on the oldest diamond.
