Red Crescent: 6,700 food parcels for drought-affected people in Somalia

The Qatar Red Crescent has launched a project to distribute food baskets to those affected by drought in Somalia, with a total of 6,700 food baskets funded by the Zakat Affairs Department of the Qatari Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. The total cost of the project is two million Qatari riyals, and it meets the food needs of an average of 46,900 beneficiaries in Banadir and Bay governorates in southern Somalia. The plan for distributing food baskets is as follows: 3,000 food baskets in the peripheral camps in Banadir Governorate. 3,700 baskets in camps in Baidoa, Bay district, southwestern Somalia. In the presence of His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Salem Al Nuaimi, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Somalia, the Qatar Red Crescent office inaugurated the distribution of food baskets to the families most affected by the drought in Baidoa, Bay Governorate, and Mogadishu, Banadir Governorate. One food basket contains 66.5 kg of basic foodstuffs, such as wheat flour, rice, sugar, edible oil, powdered milk and dates, which is enough for one family for more than a month. On the sidelines of the distribution ceremony, Dr. Abdullah Al Nuaimi: “The humanitarian work carried out by the Qatar Red Crescent in Somalia contributes to alleviating the suffering of a large segment of the population who suffer from lack of food, water and health services, and helps the brotherly Somali people to recover from the effects of drought and conflicts during the past years. This reflects the ability of Qatari humanitarian organizations to respond to humanitarian crises, and the State of Qatar’s sense of fraternal ties with afflicted peoples. Therefore, the Qatar Red Crescent was keen to mobilize its resources to continue providing humanitarian assistance in a timely manner, and to contribute to the protection of the Somali people.
