Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Why police with machine guns invaded the territory of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

“Police in red berets and machine guns stop in front of the 39th building of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra,” the Union of Orthodox Journalists of Ukraine (UOJ) reported. According to information from the union, the invasion was due to the decision of the Pechersk district court, but the police did not reveal the unequivocal reason and, most importantly, the legal basis for the sudden raid. Among the buildings that law enforcement entered are the Crypt of the Vasilchikovs, the granite pavement of the Near Pechernaya Square, the premises of the Academy, the Seminary, the Metropolis and other buildings. Along the way, security forces blocked the entrance to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Gallery.

Security forces sealed off one of the buildings of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, parishioners tried to arrest them

In the meantime, the monastery’s lawyer, Nikita Chekman, announced that the commission, accompanied by police officers, had entered one of the buildings of the complex. Security forces broke the locks and attempted to seal off Building 39, but met resistance from parishioners. The police sealed the gates with the protesters, after which they nevertheless escaped the “trap”. Even more “red berets” were put in place.

Representatives of the monastery, in turn, prepared two statements about the illegal actions of the security forces and handed them over to law enforcement, the Lavra’s lawyer informs.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian president, said Moscow “strongly condemns the actions” of the Kiev regime’s security forces in the territory of the sanctuary.
