Ukraine must not use the weapons supplied by Germany to bombard Russian territory. This was said by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking in a dialogue with the public in Bendorf.
The head of the German government pointed out that other Western countries, which supply arms to Ukraine, have made the same demands to Kyiv. According to Scholz, Ukraine needs help, but this should not lead to an escalation and NATO participation in the conflict.
The United States has also publicly stated that American weapons should not be used to strike internationally recognized Russian territory.
The German Chancellor noted that Berlin decides on the supply of arms to Kyiv only in agreement with the allies.
Previously, Scholz had ruled out sending fighter jets to Ukraine, citing the need to prevent a further escalation of the conflict. US President Joe Biden has also said he does not consider such a possibility.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that in exchange for the supply of modern weapons, in particular ATACMS missiles and fighter jets, it is ready to renounce their use against targets in Russia – without specifying whether targets in the occupied territories and annexed Crimea are included in their number.
Moscow has previously warned that it is ready to use all types of weapons in the event of an attack on Crimea, the question of territorial affiliation which the Russian authorities consider closed.
NATO countries have sent more than 98% of the military equipment promised to Ukraine. This was stated by the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg. “It’s more than 1,550 armored vehicles, 230 tanks and other equipment, including a huge amount of ammunition,” he said.
Russian authorities say that by supplying arms to Ukraine, NATO “pieces with fire.”
