Despite the success of the film Cheburashka, released at the end of last year, which has become the most profitable film in the history of Russian distribution, it is still premature to officially mention the shooting of its sequel. About this Russian media in the program “Chroniques du Nouveau Monde” declared director of the film studio “Soyuzmultfilm” Boris Mashkovtsev.
“Let’s wait until we can officially talk about a sequel,” he said.
The fact that filmmakers are already working on its April 10 sequel, reporters said actor Sergei Garmash, who played one of the main roles in the film. According to him, to the question “if there will be a sequel”, the answer is “there will be”, since the film “has broken absolutely all rental records”.
As Mashkovtsev said, granting production company Yellow, Black and White the rights to use Cheburashka’s image was a “work of trust”, which the company justified. Moreover, in the film studio itself, noted the director of Soyuzmultfilm, “for several years they have felt the demand to make children’s and family films” using characters who once became famous in cartoons Soviets”.
“And this phenomenon began even before Cheburashka appeared on the screen. In other words, it is simply the desire of the producers of feature films already accumulated in the space. Another thing is that Cheburashka turned out to be a skirmisher who demonstrated that if done right, it will really work,” added Mashkovtsev.
The comedy “Cheburashka” directed by Dmitry Dyachenko hit the screens on January 1. It became the most profitable film in the history of Russian distribution, having collected more than 5 billion rubles, and thus ahead of Klim Shipenko’s comedy Serf (2019) and the first part of the Avatar dilogy (2009) by James Cameron.
The director of Soyuzmultfilm attributed the success of the film, among other things, to the “perfect work of the producers”. According to him, in the case of Cheburashka, “the correct understanding of the factors that must accumulate for the film to work” worked: it is a correctly chosen story, and star actors combined with the same stellar “artificial character” , and a well-written script, excellent marketing, and a well-chosen New Year’s season. The absence of “Hollywood content” on the screens at that time, about which critics wrote, Mashkovtsev called one of these factors, but not the only one.
“If it was just him, and the film would have been a failure, (the film) would have failed anyway. The viewer cannot be forced to go and see a film for his own money. Because the spectator pays in advance at the cinema, it is important not to disappoint him. Considering the number of viewers who watched the film – this was said by the way by one of the film critics – so many viewers means that some went there twice, because, in theory, Russian cinemas should not have such a unique audience, “the director believes” Soyuzmultfilm.
