And the Saudi Press Agency said: “The Syrian President was received at King Abdulaziz International Airport, Prince Badr bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Makkah Al-Mukarramah Region, and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and Jeddah Governorate Secretary Saleh bin Ali Al-Turki, and Makkah Region Police Director Al-Mukarramah, Major General Saleh Al-Jabri, and Under-Secretary for Royal Protocols, Fahd Al-Sahil.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian presidency said that Bashar al-Assad would travel to the Saudi city of Jeddah to attend the Arab summit, in a step that represents the completion of Syria’s return to the Arab system.

And on Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad told Sky News Arabia that President Bashar al-Assad will come to Jeddah on Friday to attend the Arab summit.

This expected announcement follows a series of steps taken by Arab countries towards Syria in order to end its isolation.

In early May, Arab foreign ministers adopted a decision to send Syria back to take its seat in the League of Arab States, after a 12-year absence. After that, League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Assad could attend the summit, if he so wished.

The Arab League suspended Syria’s membership in 2011 when civil war broke out.
