EU after Britain announces plans to limit Russian diamond trade

The European Union will impose restrictions on the Russian diamond trade as part of increased sanctions pressure on Moscow. The corresponding statement on Friday at a press conference in Hiroshima before the start of the G7 summit was made by the head of the European Council, Charles Michel.

“We will limit the trade in Russian diamonds. Russian diamonds are not forever,” he said.

At the same time, Michel acknowledged that a decision on the next package of anti-Russian sanctions has yet to be made. He also did not respond directly to the question of whether the Belgian authorities agreed to toughen the measures concerning the trade in diamonds from the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the decision to ban the import of Russian diamonds, as well as copper, aluminum and nickel, was announced in the office of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
