Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

the conflict in Ukraine was provoked by the desire to accept it into NATO

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger believes that what is currently happening on Ukrainian territory is the result of a desire to bring Ukraine into NATO. This rhetoric turned out to be a huge mistake, which caused the conflict, he pointed out in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

“I think the proposal to accept Ukraine into NATO was a big mistake and led to this war,” the former US secretary of state said.

According to Kissinger, Russia has had an ambiguous position on Europe for hundreds of years. At the same time, Moscow was interested in the development of bilateral relations, although it feared a possible threat from European states, he concluded.

Now, according to the former US Secretary of State, Ukraine should become a member of NATO after the end of the conflict.

“I am in an ironic position: I was alone when I was against (Ukraine) membership and I am almost alone when I am for NATO membership,” he summed up.

This is not the first time that Kissinger has spoken out about the need to include Ukraine in the North Atlantic Alliance. Previously, he explained this by the confinement of Kyiv and the security of European countries.
