To encourage people to return to their regions… Financial aid for displaced persons in Iraq

After announcing in mid-April the closure of the last camps for displaced people in the governorate of Nineveh, in the north-west of the country, thus closing all the camps that shelter displaced people in the country, with the exception of those located in the region of Iraqi Kurdistan, which according to the Ministry of Immigration has 26 camps.

financial aid

The Ministry of Migration and Displacement continues to launch successive batches of financial grants which it allocates to returning families, with the grant amount per family amounting to one and a half million Iraqi dinars, which is equivalent to approximately one thousand US dollars, in order to encourage the return of displaced persons and to help them manage their affairs and restart their lives in their region of origin.

In this context, the Minister of Migration and Displacement, Evan Faeq Jabro, revealed on Sunday during a field visit to the governorate of Salah al-Din, in the north of the country, that “the ministry will launch a new grant in the next few days.”

The last installment of this financial aid was paid at the beginning of May to nearly 7,000 families returning to their regions.

Commentators believe that the amount is low and does not meet the minimum needs of families returning after long suffering related to displacement, in order to manage their affairs and cope with the psychological and material damage they have suffered, while d Others see it as an initiative, despite its symbolism, which helps, albeit slightly, to support the return of the displaced to their areas and to encourage them to do so, and makes them aware that the government is at their side and tries to alleviate their suffering.

Objectives and conditions of the grant

The official spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement, Ali Abbas Jahangir, said in an interview with Sky News Arabia:

These grants have been running for about two years, and we are dependent on their spending on the budget, as well as the funding and cash available to the ministry, and so on as they become available from time to time.

The beneficiary family must be among the returnees in their areas according to the priority of registration, with the exception of certain cases for families that include patients, relatives of martyrs or people with special needs, since they are included in these grants as matter. to be flexible and take into account their needs, compelling circumstances and the confidentiality of their files. Meals have been provided to over 50,000 families over a period of approximately two years, and we will no doubt continue to provide more such grants whenever the necessary cash is available. It is part of our encouragement to displaced families to return to their homes and their regions of origin, in order to put an end to the problem of the file of displaced persons and to close it once and for all. The amount of the subsidy, which is one and a half million dinars, although it is a small amount, but in view of the large number of displaced families and beneficiaries, the total of these subsidies constitutes very large amounts, as according to According to a study conducted by the Ministry of Immigration, the total amounts required for these subsidies oscillate at least between 670 and 700 billion dinars. These one-time grants are a contribution from the ministry to help displaced families and returning families manage their affairs and start anew, but the emergency assistance provided to them by us and in coordination with relevant authorities and organizations will continue. . Our message in offering these grants is to prove that we are with our displaced as much as possible, and even after that and during the first periods of their return, we will continue our support for them, in addition to sponsorship and funding from the Ministry. small projects and other fields and initiatives in order to serve these returnees, and help them to improve their living conditions, after what they suffered from the scourge and hardships.
