Italian Filippo Ganna broke his own track pursuit world record on Friday, completing the four kilometers in 4 min 01 sec 934th during the qualifications for the Berlin World Championships.
The 23-year-old runner from the Ineos team is getting a little closer to the symbolic 4-minute wall. He set his previous world record in November in 4 min 02 sec 647e.
Originally from Piedmont, Ganna also has a career on the road, but it is on the track that he best expresses his enormous potential, with already three titles of world pursuit champion in 2016, 2018 and 2019.
Starting relatively slowly, he started entering the record times after the two kilometers, to finish very strong and take first place in the qualifications.
He will face Friday evening for the gold medal of the world championships of the American Ashton Lambie, second stopwatch of the qualifications with a canon time also of 4 min 03 sec 640e.
The bronze final will see Frenchman Corentin Ermenault, who took third place breaking the French record in 4 min 7 sec, 593rd, against another Italian hopeful, Jonathan Milan, 19 years old.
