Coronavirus out of control in India: more than 64,000 new cases in one day

The third country in the world with the most cases and the fourth with the most deaths, India confirmed today that it has one of the fastest contagion curves at this time of the pandemic, with more than 64,500 new infections in the last 24 hours alone.

In total, the country already has more than 2.4 million infected and more than 48,000 deaths, of which more than 1,000 were registered in the last hours, according to the country’s health authorities, cited by the NDTV news channel.

The state of Maharashtra and its capital, Mumbai, are of particular concern to the authorities since only in the last 24 hours it added 11,813 more positives and reached a total of 560,126 since the start of the pandemic.

The Minister of Health, Harsh Vardhan, however, highlighted positive data at the national level.

“There has not been a day in recent months in which the recovery rate (of COVID infected patients) has not improved and the mortality rate is not less than the previous day,” said the official.

This week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in a virtual meeting with the leaders of the most affected Indian states, he was confident that the country will soon overcome the pandemic and asked them to increase the number of tests carried out per day.

India, an Asian country of nearly 1.4 billion people, conducts around 700,000 tests daily, at least as per the government records.
