The US envoy will hold talks with Taliban and Afghan government officials

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, went to Doha and Kabul on Sunday for talks with Taliban representatives and senior Afghan officials, the State Department said.

A statement stated that Khalilzad would meet with Taliban representatives in Doha to discuss the implementation of an agreement between the United States and the Taliban “and pressure to take the necessary steps to start negotiations between Afghans, including significantly reducing violence.”

The statement added that he will meet in Kabul with senior government officials “to discuss the steps that the Afghan government must take to start negotiations between Afghans as soon as possible
