US Global Popularity Drops Significantly During Trump’s Presidency – Washington Post

The US ‘approval ratings’ hit their lowest level in 20 years.

As the US presidential election approaches, tensions in the United States are growing. “America is respected again,” US President Donald Trump often stresses during his speeches. However, how reliable this statement is is difficult to say. In fact, the “prestige” of the United States of America under President Trump has dropped significantly, and this is likely to be quite difficult to fix, writes The Washington Post.

A poll conducted this summer shows that the “positive attitude” towards the US among countries such as the UK, France, Canada, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden has reached its lowest level in 20 years.

In only one country, South Korea, more than 50% of those surveyed had a “positive vision” of the United States.

Thus, summing up all the indicators, the approval rating of the United States in the world is 34%.

For example, in 2016, the approval rating of the United States globally fluctuated between 52% and 72%.

This change in indicators can be associated with the COVID-19 pandemic because many countries believe that the United States was unable to adequately cope with the pandemic.

84% of those surveyed said that the United States “has actually lost the fight against coronavirus.”

At the same time, the biggest reason for the “unpopularity of the United States”, according to the poll, is President Donald Trump.

Trump’s ratings are significantly lower than those of former US President Barack Obama, who had 68% to 93% confidence in 2016.

Interestingly, even prominent authoritarian leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have a higher level of trust among the world’s democracies than Donald Trump, according to the poll.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel became the leader with the highest level of trust among democracies.

Global rankings can be volatile and change constantly. For example, after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, US approval ratings dropped sharply, but the numbers changed during the presidency of Barack Obama.

It is difficult to say for now whether the US approval ratings in the world will improve if Democratic candidate Joe Biden becomes president and Trump leaves the presidency. One way or another, trust in America will be difficult to restore, The Washington Post sums up.
