Ashli Babbitt: The Air Force Veteran Killed in Capitol Riots

Ashli Babbitt, a 14-year Air Force veteran, became a central figure in the tragic events of January 6, 2021, when she was fatally shot during the storming of the Capitol. A devoted supporter of President Donald Trump, Babbitt’s death underscores the gravity of the day’s violence and its impact on American society.

A Veteran and Libertarian

Babbitt, identified by her husband and confirmed by media outlets, was a resident of San Diego, California. Her service included four military deployments, demonstrating her long-standing commitment to the United States. On her Twitter account, she described herself as a “veteran” and “libertarian,” with a history of vocal support for President Trump and his policies.

The Capitol Siege and Her Final Moments

The chaos unfolded as pro-Trump protesters stormed the Capitol, disrupting Congress’s certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory. During the breach, Capitol Police officers faced an aggressive crowd. According to Chief Robert Contee, “Uniformed agents of the Capitol police confronted them, and at one point, one of them used his service weapon” to fatally shoot Babbitt as she attempted to climb through a barricaded window into the Speaker’s Lobby.

She was immediately transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Chief Contee referred to the incident as a “tragic event” and confirmed an investigation was underway.

A Day of Violence and Loss

The riot led to multiple fatalities, including three other individuals who reportedly succumbed to medical emergencies near the Capitol. Police arrested 52 people, with 26 apprehended inside the building. The day’s violence prompted Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to extend the city’s state of emergency for 15 days to ensure safety during Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

Family’s Reaction and Her Husband’s Statement

Babbitt’s husband, who did not accompany her to Washington, described her as a “passionate supporter of President Trump.” He expressed shock at her decision to participate in the storming of the Capitol. Her mother-in-law echoed this sentiment, stating, “I really don’t know why she decided to break into the Capitol.”

Her Social Media Presence

Ashli Babbitt was active on social media, often retweeting messages that rallied support for Trump and encouraged participation in the January 6 protest. A day before the riot, she tweeted:
“Nothing will stop us … the storm is here.”

This message, alongside others, showcased her fervent belief in the movement she supported.

A Nation Divided

The events of January 6, culminating in Babbitt’s death, have left the nation deeply polarized. Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush condemned the violence. Obama remarked, “Trump instigated violence; this day will be remembered,” while Bush labeled the events a “violent assault on democracy.”

Misinformation and political rhetoric have played significant roles in dividing the country, fueling distrust and unrest. The Capitol attack was a stark reminder of how these forces can lead to devastating consequences.

The Legacy of January 6
