Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The Mexican president repeated his request for asylum to Wikileaks founder Assange

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday that he handed over a letter to US President Joe Biden in which he defends the innocence of Julian Assange and repeated the earlier offer of asylum to the WikiLeaks founder.

The United Kingdom last month approved Assange’s extradition to the United States to face charges related to WikiLeaks’ publication of classified U.S. military information and diplomatic cables.

–  I submitted a letter to the president regarding Assange, explaining that he did not commit any serious crime, he did not cause anyone’s death, he did not violate human rights, he was only exercising his freedom, and that his arrest would represent a permanent consequence for freedom of expression – said Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador at the regular press conference.

This year, Lopez Obrador said that he also offered asylum to Assange in a letter sent to former US President Donald Trump before he left office, and he repeated it at the beginning of Biden’s presidential term in 2021, reports Reuters.
