The Biden administration announced on Monday that the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic would be lifted on May 11. This comes nearly three years after the United States introduced drastic pandemic control measures to contain the spread of the disease.
The COVID-19 emergency and public health emergency was declared in 2020 by President Donald Trump. Biden has repeatedly extended measures that allow millions of Americans to receive free tests, vaccines and treatment.
The White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement that the executive order, which expires in the coming months, will be further extended until May 11 and then rescinded.
“This is consistent with the administration’s previous requirement to notify at least 60 days prior to termination [ЧП]“, reads the press release.
The government is paying citizens for COVID-19 vaccines, certain tests and certain treatments in accordance with the emergency decree. After this period, these costs will be transferred to private insurance and public health plans.
The expiration of the order also ends the guidelines known as Section 42, which return detained Nicaraguan, Cuban and Haitian migrants as they cross the U.S.-Mexico border into Mexico, the statement said.
In a separate statement from the OMB, Joe Biden will veto a bill proposed to Congress that would remove mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for health care providers participating in certain federal programs.
The incidence of COVID-19 in the United States is falling, although more than 500 people still die from the disease every day, according to government data.
