On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meets European leaders in Kiev.
At the summit, he hopes to fulfill the promise of his country’s accelerated entry into the EU and the imposition of additional sanctions against Russia.
However, analysts say his hopes for accelerated EU admission are unlikely to materialize, despite Ukraine urgently needing EU support in the face of a Russian invasion. Although the EU supports Ukraine, there is no indication that it is ready to speed up the admission process.
On Friday, on the eve of the summit, Zelenskyyy met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
In his daily address Thursday, Zelenskyyy thanked von der Leyen, “his colleagues and our friends in the EU for their tangible support on the path to integration and in protecting our country and our people.”
