After delivering his State of the Union address to Congress, President Joe Biden embarked on a tour of states critical to his 2024 re-election campaign.
On Wednesday, Biden traveled to Wisconsin, where, speaking at the union’s labor training center, he said his policies were building “an economy that works for working people.”
Democrats hope Biden can use economic gains and record job creation to win voter support.
The president’s public approval rating stood at 41% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll that ended on Sunday.
Biden’s trip will focus on a few key states that his aides say will determine his chances of winning.
Wisconsin is a highly competitive state. In 2016, the majority of voters here backed Republican Donald Trump, and in 2020 they preferred Biden.
On Thursday, Biden travels to Tampa, Fla., to speak out against a Republican proposal to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits. These elder care and health care programs are popular with voters, especially in Florida, where there are many older Americans.
Democratic Party leaders fear that a growing number of residents of Florida, the scene of political strife for nearly seventy years, are voting for Republican candidates.
Biden has said he plans to run for a second term, with an official announcement expected in the coming weeks. His Tuesday speech was hailed by officials as the start of his 2024 re-election campaign.
