Ukraine’s president pledged on Friday to achieve victory in 2023, speaking on the grim anniversary of the Russian invasion that upended the lives of all Ukrainians and threatened Europe’s security.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy , it was “the longest day” in Ukraine, but the country’s stubborn resistance a year later proved that “every tomorrow is worth fighting for”.
In a day of remembrance, reflection and tears, the tone of the Ukrainian president’s speech reflected the national resilience of Ukrainians in the face of the largest and deadliest war in Europe since 1945. Zelenskyy said Ukrainians had proven their invincibility during “a year of pain, grief, faith and unity”.
“We’ve been up for exactly a year,” Zelenskyyy said. February 24, 2022, he said, was “the longest day of our lives. The darkest day in our modern history. We woke up early and haven’t slept since.
“We have become one family. There are no more strangers among us. Ukrainians hosted Ukrainians, opened their homes and their hearts to those who were forced to flee from war,” the Ukrainian President said. “We resist all threats, bombings, cluster bombs, cruise missiles, kamikaze drones, power cuts and cold. We are stronger than that.”
