The Belarusian Language Day itself falls on February 21 and is timed to coincide with International Mother Language Day, proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999. In Belarus it has been widely celebrated since 2009, events traditionally last all the last week of February. Cultural and educational events are taking place these days in Russia, where more than 550,000 Belarusians live.
