According to Vedomosti, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will visit Moscow in mid-March. The purpose of the Syrian leader’s visit, as stated, is to receive financial and energy assistance from the Russian leadership.
According to experts, the need for such assistance arose in Syria against the backdrop of rising prices for petroleum products supplied by Iran, as well as in the aftermath of the February earthquakes.
Bashar al-Assad’s previous visit to Moscow took place in September 2021. Since then, however, the economic situation in Syria has deteriorated significantly. The lack of fuel has caused problems in various sectors of the economy and, according to the UN, 90% of the Syrian population is in need of humanitarian aid. The country’s authorities in turn accuse Western countries of imposing economic sanctions that contribute to the aggravation of the crisis in Syria.
