If you have high cholesterol, avoid foods high in saturated fat and sugar. Such food can aggravate the situation. However, there are also foods that can bring cholesterol levels in order.
One food that can help people with high cholesterol is lemons. Scientists tested the effect of citrus fruits on rabbits.
The study, published in the Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, was specifically designed to investigate the lipid-lowering effects of lemon juice in rabbits on a high-cholesterol diet for four weeks.
The rabbits were divided into two groups. They were fed daily for 30 days with a cholesterol-rich meal. After this period, half received fresh lemon juice for the next 30 days, while the control group received only the same amount of water.
The conclusion indicates that the consumption of lemon juice (1 ml per kg per day) led to a decrease in low density lipoproteins (the “bad” cholesterol) and an increase in high density lipoproteins (the “good” cholesterol).
