The Moscow Timiryazevsky District Court sentenced Dmitry Ivanov, the author of the Protest MGU telegram channel, to 8.5 years in a penal colony. He was found guilty of spreading false stories about the Russian military motivated by political hatred (clauses “b”, “e” of part 2 of article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). It is reported by “Mediazona”*.
Ivanov is also prohibited from maintaining public pages on the Internet for four years after his release.
At the same time, according to Mediazona*, Judge Daria Pugacheva, when announcing the verdict, said that Ivanov’s term would be 8 years and 3 months. The court secretary explained to reporters that the term would be 8.5 years. Lawyer Maria Eismont said she would await the printed verdict.
Dozens of people came to support Ivanov. The defendant himself said before the announcement of the verdict that he did not believe he should serve his full sentence.
Dmitry Ivanov is a student at the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics of Moscow State University, one of the founders of the Protest MSU telegram channel. He was arrested in June 2022, having already served two administrative arrests. The reason for the initiation of criminal proceedings against Ivanov was his social media posts about the events in Mariupol, Bucha and at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
