Ukraine is part of Russia and the borders between the two countries are fictional, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said in an interview with Russian state agencies. He published fragment of his interview in the telegram channel.
“Guys, well, the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Yes, it’s sad, but it happened – both because of the poor policy of the leadership of the Soviet Union, and because of your external interference. The country collapsed, but the ties did not break, the people remained the same. How do you imagine it? That, for example, Ukraine will become a member of NATO? “said Medvedev.
The politician noted that missiles are produced in Ukraine, “there was a nuclear weapons complex there.” And if Ukraine joins NATO, then Russia will have a neighbor, “which not only is part of a hostile bloc, but which will also produce nuclear weapons”.
“Besides, Ukraine is generally part of Russia. Let’s be honest: it’s part of Russia. But for geopolitical reasons and because of the history of what happened, we put up with the fact that we live in different apartments for a long time,” Medvedev said.
According to him, Russia was forced to reckon with these “fictitious” borders, and the territory of Ukraine – “except for some areas that came to us as a result of the Second World War” – has always made part of the Russian Empire.
“Similarly, these territories were inhabited by the original Russian population and have always been part of Russia in the narrow sense of the word – Greater Russia, not Little Russia,” Medvedev concluded.
In November 2022, Medvedev, commenting on statements by Ukrainian authorities about their intention to return Crimea to their control, called Kiev “a Russian city in which they have always thought and spoken Russian”. “To make it very clear what and how to come back,” he said.
