Turkish Rodina party leader Dogu Perincek, who previously submitted a candidacy to the Supreme Electoral Council to contest the country’s presidential elections, has said that if he comes to power, Turkey will leave the North Atlantic bloc for good.
The politician explained his decision by the fact that NATO is the only threat to the country and its citizens.
“Our party’s decision to withdraw from NATO and its justification are very weighty. According to polls, 80% of Turkish residents now see the United States of America as a threat, 70% of Turks see Russia and China as friends,” RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.
A candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Turkey must collect 100,000 signatures. The Motherland Party adheres to an anti-Western and anti-American position. Although the association is not represented in the Turkish Parliament, it has over 50,000 members.
Earlier, the leader of the Republican People’s Party of Turkey, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, was officially registered as the country’s presidential candidate. He is supported by six Turkish opposition parties who hope that Kılıçdaroğlu can defeat the outgoing head of state, Recep Taip Erdogan, in the next elections.
