Swedish parliament votes on NATO membership

March 22, 2023

The Swedish parliament has supported the country’s membership in NATO. The meeting was broadcast on the Parliament’s website.

269 MPs voted for NATO membership, 37 voted against.

Recall that in May 2022, Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara would respond positively to Finland’s NATO candidacy, given its adequate position. As for Sweden, Erdogan said that it had not fulfilled its obligations to Turkey and therefore the Turkish parliament would not yet vote for Sweden’s entry into NATO.

The Hungarian parliament intends to vote on Finland’s NATO membership on March 27, with Sweden’s membership to be decided later. Turkey and Hungary are the only two NATO member countries whose parliaments have not yet ratified Finland and Sweden’s membership of the North Atlantic Alliance.
