Modi govt has decided to bring down ‘disturbed areas’ in North East under AFSPA: Shah

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has once again decided to decongest the “disturbed areas” declared under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, AFSPA, in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur. He thanked the Prime Minister for bringing a positive change in the lives of the people of the North East and connecting the region to the hearts of the rest of India. “Congratulations to our sisters and brothers of the Northeast on this momentous occasion,” Shah said. In Manipur, the entire state, except the Imphal municipal area, was declared a disturbed area in 2004 and has been in effect since then. On April 1, 2022, 15 police stations in six districts were taken out of the ambit of AFSPA. Officials said that from April 1, 2023, along with the removal of AFSPA from a total of 19 police station areas in seven districts of the state, AFSPA has been removed from the areas under four other police station areas.

AFSPA has been in force in Nagaland since 1995. It has been removed from 15 police station areas of seven districts from April 1, 2022. AFSPA was removed from three other police stations with effect from April 1, 2023, following the recommendation of a government-appointed committee, officials said. With this, a total of 18 police stations in eight districts of Nagaland have been removed from the list of disturbed areas.
