Moscow court detains alleged spy Oksana Fedorova

The Khamovniki court in Moscow arrested Oksana Fedorova, a citizen suspected of spying, the court’s press service said. The request for a compulsory measure until June 3, 2023 was granted on Monday, April 3.

The suspect’s citizenship and profession are not disclosed. The documents in the file are classified as “secret” and the hearing itself was held behind closed doors. The maximum penalty under this article is 20 years in prison.

On March 30, Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich was arrested in Yekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage. According to the FSB, on instructions from the United States, it was collecting information about one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex which constitutes a state secret.

The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, noted that an employee of an American newspaper was caught red-handed. The court chose a preventive measure for the defendant in the form of detention until May 29, 2023. US President Joe Biden called on Russian authorities to release the journalist.
