Russians banned from buying property in Lithuania

April 4, 2023

At the meeting, the Seimas of Lithuania voted to ban Russians from buying property in the country.

It should be noted that 76 parliamentarians voted for the adoption of the law, 13 deputies were against, 34 others abstained.

An exception will be made for citizens of the Russian Federation who have a permanent residence permit. Moreover, the ban will not affect Russians who acquire real estate in Lithuania as an inheritance.

Recently, Vilnius’ policy towards Moscow has been characterized by increasingly hostile measures in almost all areas. So, in September last year, Lithuania banned the entry of Russian citizens with Schengen visas from all countries. Restrictions have been introduced for the external border of the European Union.

In January 2023, Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairis supported the idea of introducing a “mental quarantine” for Russian culture. According to him, Russia uses culture as a weapon.
